Story Summary – Lamb to the Slaughter
"Lamb to the Slaughter" by Roald Dahl is a dark short story about Mary Maloney, a pregnant housewife whose husband, Patrick, unexpectedly tells her he’s leaving. Shocked and heartbroken, Mary kills him with a frozen leg of lamb. To avoid suspicion, she cooks the lamb, goes to the local shop to create an alibi, and later calls the police. When the officers arrive and search for the murder weapon, Mary offers them dinner — the cooked lamb — which they eat, unknowingly destroying the evidence.
Storyboard Interpretation
For my storyboard, I focused on the scenes right after Mary kills her husband — I wanted to show how calm and focused Mary becomes, even as everything was falling apart.
I set my version in Edinburgh, Scotland. The grey skies, cobbled streets, and stone buildings gave it a cold. I imagined myself walking through the neighbourhood, holding in the panic, pretending everything was normal — just a woman popping to the shop. That contrast between calm on the outside and chaos underneath was what I really wanted to capture.
